South African music legend Caiphus Semenya turns 80 this month and to mark this momentous occasion, the Market Theatre will host fellow musos Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Condry Ziqubu and Tsepo Tsola who will pay tribute to the icon.
This festive night will start with an intimate dinner, they will then proceeded to the John Kani theatre. There will also have music from Buwa, the theatrical production written by Semenya in 1986 about the oppressive apartheid regime.
“Turning 80 is not a blessing to be taken for granted,” Semenya said. The Matswele hit maker also said there are many colleagues he started his journey with, and unfortunately most of them have since passed away.
“It’s with a grateful heart that I look back and appreciate the blessings I received from Ramasedi (meaning Almighty God in Setswana), the Creator of the Universe,” Semenya said.
The proceeds from the concert will go to Semenya’s National Academy of Africa’s Performing Arts (NAAPA) in Jabulani, Soweto.
