South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu has made history by becoming the first African to win the prestigious LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) Prize.
The Kimberley born designer beat 1700 applicants to claim the prize. He will receive a €300,000 grant (R4,9 million) and a year-long mentorship at the French luxury conglomerate.
The 26 year old studied fashion design, fashion photography and fashion media at the LISOF School of Fashion in Johannesburg. He started his self-titled womenswear label in 2017.
Judging this Prize were industry heavyweights such as Marc Jacobs, Clare Waight Keller, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Kris Van Assche and others.
