Nkosinathi Maphumulo popularly known as Black Coffee graced The Daily Show with Trevor Noah this Wednesday. The superstar DJ talked about what drives his success and his aspirations for the continent of Africa.
When asked why he thinks he’s ‘blown up’ all over the world, Black Coffee said it is because of his drive as someone with humble beginnings.
“It’s resilience, you know, uhm, it’s knowing hunger and knowing that you have experienced it and that you don’t wanna go back there. That’s what has kept me going and gotten me to where I am today,” he explained.
Trevor said the DJ inspires him because he uses his music to bring about change and help others, such as his current project of building a school here in South Africa.
The muso added that he envisions a future where Africa is seen in the same light as other continents in terms of creativity and artistry.
“Maybe it is our fault, where we’ve always seen Africa as an inferior place… It took away so much from the continent and we’re trying to reverse that and create a space in Africa that will inspire Africans to want to stay and create a future,” he said.
