Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala has died. The 78 year old passed away at a Pretoria hospital this Tuesday morning. He reportedly spent his last moments with his wife.
He was one of the original members of the Grammy award winning Isicathamiya group. The late musician retired in 2017 where problems with his health began.
He founded the acclaimed Ladysmith Black Mambazo in 1960 following dreams he had about the group. They entered a series of competions where they dominated over other Isicathamiya bands.
He elected to name the group “Mambazo” meaning axe because they kept chopping down the competition. The family of the late muso will reportedly release a statement later this Tuesday.
