 Losing Lerato scores big at international film festival

Kagiso Modupe’s film Losing Lerato sweeped up awards at the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema. The festival took place in California in the U.S. this past weekend.

Losing Lerato was well received in South Africa and topped the local box office, competing with international movies at the time. It grossed R4.1 million within just five weeks of its release.

In total the movie scored a whooping six awards! The former Scandal! actor took home Best Actor Feature while Samela Tyelbooi won Best Actress Feauture. Kagiso’s daughter Tshimollo Modupe who plays the character of Lerato won the Best Child Perfomance.

The film also won the Golden Era Humanitarian Narrative Award, Best Original Score (composed by Brian Temba) and Festival Favourite.

Losing Lerato follows a young professional black man who takes matters into his own hands by kidnapping his daughter. This leads to the mother involving the law in seeking her daughter. It tells the story of a desperate man and how far he is willing to go to keep his daughter close.
