Buhlebendalo Mda released her album this past week. The offering is titled Chosi and is the singer’s first solo offering. Known for her vocals on the award winning accapela group The Soil, she is forging her own path.
In a video posted on Instagram she described the album as a way to step into her own truth as someone with an ancestral calling. “I’ve been on a journey of self-realisation and I am loving myself anew,” she explained.
She said she had learned to live authentically and not pander to anyone else. “One thing my journey has taught me is to never hold back. I used to because I was afraid I would scare my fans away, that they would not understand how I am using my voice, or my way of being would come across as scary to the ‘bougie’ people.”
She said she found courage to be who she is in her spirituality. “My ancestors also gave me the boldness to share. I’m no longer afraid to be me and to show my African spirituality.”
